Over the course of HIFF I was able to attend three screenings, Bombay Rose, Knives Out, and The Reel Wāhine of Hawai’i. I chose these films mostly because I had to fit them around my schedule. Unfortunately I was working on many assignments during this time, but if I did have more free time I would of loved to go and see new films. Personally, I was happy to go to HIFF in general, as each movie seen was enjoyable. I also liked hearing about other films reporters had gone and seen and their thoughts about them. Seeing the animated film Bombay Rose, the modern love story gave a glimpse into Indian culture and society. Kamala and Salim faced outsider criticism when they learn about each other’s religions and occupations. At the beginning of the film the main character Salim is watching a Bollywood romance film in the theatre but the on-screen kiss was censored due to government laws. We see how some people live their lives in a certain part of the globe, and yet the story ended on a hopeful note. Though I enjoyed all of the films I was able to see at HIFF, there was one film I would of liked to have seen called Jojo Rabbit as it was directed and starred by Taika Waititi. Luckily, it’s currently out in theaters at the moment.

I am greatly appreciative to have been a press reporter at HIFF this year, as it is a central and important event here in Hawai’i. Many local businesses get involved and sponsor the film screenings and anything else needed. The collaboration between HPU and HIFF offers different insights to the festival films, and get the film awareness out into the public. I was happy to help out where I could as a reporter. I learned a lot through this collaboration between HPU and HIFF, it was definitely a useful learning experience because it gave us the chance to work as a professional reporter would, and report in real time to an ongoing event. I tried to publish a report as soon as I could after watching each film, but I think the most difficult part was trying to tell the audience about the film but without giving too much away about its plot or scenes. I would definitely recommend HIFF to a friend or a family member! I think it’s always fun going to the theatre with friends or family, I was able to go and see The Reel Wāhine of Hawai’i with a friend and even ran into another friend at the Knives Out premiere. I especially like post-film conversations afterwards and hearing everyone’s thoughts. I enjoyed my experience this year at HIFF and it’s great to hear everyone else did too!
