One of my favorite genres for films are documentaries, and luckily for me Netflix has been releasing quite a few docuseries recently. They are many varieties to choose from on this platform, ranging from ancient history, science, political, or contemporary trends. One of my favorite series is called “Tales by Light” produced by National Geographic. This docuseries feature many different photographers and how they use their photography to help inspire change in their world. I enjoy how each photographer’s story is unique, and show how they use their photography to show their passions whether environmental, cultural, humanitarian, endangered species, or spiritual.

As a cinematic student, I learn a lot about the different photographer’s methods, practices, and equipment. It’s super interesting to see their past photography pieces and their history of why they got into photography. There is an interesting article where the DP of the series Abraham Joffe goes into detail about getting the shots for the series. It seems like a lot of hard work and determination, as each episode was a new story so they had to go out and get many clips on various subjects. Though it is a lot of effort, it must be pretty amazing going on these different adventures and learning about other traditions. A few of my favorite episodes include one about sharks, where they are shown as the gentle creatures in their own habitat. Another includes one where they go to Bangladesh and how children live their lives in a dangerous and at-risk city. Another one is when the crew heads to Australia and go on a journey through sacred sites and traditions of a few surviving Aboriginal tribes.

I would highly recommend this show to anyone who loves documentaries or has a passion for films and saving the world. I really enjoy this show because it can combine all the subjects of knowledge, photography and social justice, allowing it to be enjoyed by a broad audience. I think there is truly something for everyone who watches this show and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!
